ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
Students:
- read and discussed quality literature
- demonstrated understanding of texts in a multitude of ways, including answering different kinds of questions and writing personal responses to communicate their ideas about what they read
- read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy, and were independent focused readers
- engaged in report writing or news articles writing, and daily personal writing and writing to learn in all subject areas
MATHEMATICS
GRADE 5:
Patterns and relations, statistics and probability and embedded multiplication and estimation strategies.
Patterns & Algebra- Students used diagrams and number lines to make and determine patterns, rules, and extended patterns. They were introduced to variables to solve equations and create and solve word problems using expressions.
Number Concepts- Students developed strategies for estimation and demonstrated recall of basic multiplication facts to 81 using visuals and equations.
Statistics and Probability- Students used terminology describe the chance events would occur to predict and then experiment to record the outcomes using dice and spinners. They also demonstrated their understanding of first-hand and second-hand data to create bar and double bar graphs.
GRADE 6:
Patterns & Algebra - Students used objects and concrete models to make patterns, rules, charts, a ordered pairs and graphs. They also learned about equality and operations on equality (e.g. equations) to solve problems.
Number Concepts - Students demonstrated number sense for whole numbers, including place value, as well as multiples, factors, and composite and prime numbers. Students continued to develop their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers.
Shape and Space - Students demonstrated an understanding of angles by classifying, estimating and determining angle measures. They also constructed and compared triangles and worked with the interior sum of triangles and quadrilaterals.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Histories and Stories of Ways of Life in Canada Students have been investigating the people and the stories of Canada and their ways of life over time and developing an appreciation of the diversity of Canada’s heritage.
SCIENCE
Trees & Forests
Students learned about trees as individual plants and as part of a forest ecosystem. By examining local species, they learned to recognize the characteristics of different trees and developed skill in describing and interpreting the structural features of trees.
Classroom Chemistry
Students have been learning about the properties and interactions of some safe to handle household liquids and solids. For example, they have tested a variety of materials to see what happens when things are mixed together. While engaged in the process of scientific investigation, students are developing a set of abilities and understandings as they contribute their ideas.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH
Students were expected to interact positively with others, showing good communication, fair play, leadership and teamwork.
Students were challenged to develop fitness and coordination through both individual and team activities, including:
- Badminton: Development of eye hand coordination, accuracy, and agility
- Volleyball: Basic skills including the serve, volley, set, “bump”. Modified games were played to develop skills.
